 Job Summary: Performs a variety of operations and maintenance work related to a public water distribution system.  Provide customer service to District residents related to pressure, water quality, and leaks. Work safely and efficiently operating equipment. Interfaces with contractors, consultants, etc., representing needs and interests of the District.  Must be able to complete allocated tasks in a timely manner. Must reside within 45 minutes of the District office and be available for on-call and able to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis. This is not considered a supervisory role.

The Operations and Maintenance Technician is accountable to and receives performance evaluation from the Utility Field Supervisor.

FLSA: Non-exempt (hourly; eligible for overtime in compliance with local, state and federal regulations)

Pay Range: $24.55-$34.37 per hour

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Level 1 distribution certification in water distribution preferred
  • If you do not have a level 1 distribution certificate, you must obtain a level 1 distribution certificate within one year of date of hire
  • Valid driver license and clean driving record
  • Basic reading/writing skills, ability to follow written/oral instructions, use basic tools, add and subtract numbers, and ability to perform defined tasks
  • Communication and basic computer skills
  • Ability to solve a variety of problems in situations where there are substantially diversified procedures

Essential Functions:

  • Distribution system flushing
  • Hydrant inspection and maintenance
  • Valve inspection and repair
  • Booster pumping station maintenance and repair
  • Cross-connection control
  • Meter reading
  • Monitor SCADA system
  • Perform work safety using a variety of personal protective equipment
  • Assist in maintaining and tracking inventory
  • Water quality complaints and communications
  • Customer appointments (i.e. pressure, leaks, meters, etc.)
  • Frequent contact with the public – in person, via email/telephone, sometimes facing adverse or confrontational situations with internal/external customers
  • Employee is subject to working alone and /or with groups and/or attending meetings
  • Perform clean up after work is completed
  • Use shovel, hand tools, power tools, and wide variety of shut off keys
  • Maintaining the District vehicles and tools associated with trucks

Work Environment:

  • This position requires the ability to work outdoors with frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions and uneven terrain, and to safely set up and operate equipment in areas with high-speed traffic
  • Employee may be required to work outdoors in extreme temperatures (below 32°F or above 100°F) for periods exceeding one hour, with additional consideration given to environmental factors such as wind and humidity
  • Employee is subject to driving District vehicle in all weather conditions
  • Employee may be exposed to occupational hazards, including proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles and traffic, vaults, and rough or uneven terrain
  • Employee required to be available for on-call and able to work nights, overtime, holidays, evenings, or weekends
  • Employee may have frequent interruptions; be required to manage competing priorities; and have inflexible deadlines
  • Dangerous to considerable hazards reflect a frequent exposure to conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury, e.g., in trenches, shoring, and in confined spaces; working on different construction sites or with heavy and moving equipment, noise, high-volume traffic or all the above; performing field activities on un-level, rocky and slippery surfaces  

Physical Requirements: 

  • Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions, frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs.) and use of medium weight tools; employee will perform manual labor, such as lifting manhole covers weighing up to 100 lbs.; walking on uneven ground or river and ditch banks retrieving water samples or climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach while operating in the field; entering/exiting manholes or vaults; walking near or on ditches; working in all weather conditions at times of excessive temperatures of heat and extreme cold, working in or near moving traffic with appropriate traffic control set up;
  • The essential functions of this job require frequent balancing, bending/stooping, carrying/lifting light to heavy objects, climbing, fingering, grasping, repetitive motion, hearing, sitting, standing, talking, and walking. Occasionally the employee will be required to pull, push, reach, feel temperature, and kneel.

Salary Range and Benefits:

$24.55-$34.37/hr. depending on experience.
